01What is a smart home or building automation system?+
A proper automation system connects different building functions so they can work together rather than operating as separate devices. Lighting, air conditioning, shading, audio, security, access control, energy monitoring and other systems can respond to schedules, sensors, conditions and user input.
The objective is not simply to control everything from an app. It is to make the building operate intelligently in the background.
02What is the difference between automation and simply controlling devices from an app?+
App control means you still need to decide what should happen and press a button. Automation allows the building to make routine decisions according to programmed logic.
Lights can respond to presence and daylight, air conditioning can follow occupancy and schedules, shades can respond to conditions, and equipment can turn off when it is no longer required.
The app remains useful when you want to intervene, but it should not become another remote control that you constantly need to operate.
03Is a wired or wireless smart home system better?+
For a new home, major renovation or commercial project where cabling can be planned properly, Madoc generally prefers wired infrastructure for the core building systems.
Wireless technology can still be useful for retrofits, extensions or locations where new cabling would be impractical.
The right approach depends on the building rather than treating either technology as universally better. Loxone supports both wired infrastructure and Loxone Air for suitable retrofit applications.
04Does the automation system still work if the internet goes down?+
Yes. With a Loxone system, the core automation is handled locally by the Miniserver. Lighting, climate, shading and programmed automation logic do not require a continuous internet connection to operate.
Internet dependent functions such as remote access, certain online services or cloud dependent third party integrations may become temporarily unavailable, but the core building automation continues to operate locally.
05Is my smart home data stored in the cloud?+
Loxone's core automation and system data are handled locally by the Miniserver rather than depending on an external cloud for everyday operation.
Some integrated third party products or services may still rely on their own cloud platforms. Madoc considers these dependencies during system design so the client understands which functions are local and which depend on an external service.
06Can I still use normal wall switches and manual controls?+
Yes. A well designed automation system should not make you dependent on a phone.
Wall controls remain an important part of the system while automation handles repetitive functions in the background. Manual control remains available whenever you want to override or change what the building is doing.
07Do I need to use the app every day?+
Ideally, no.
The app is useful for monitoring, changing settings, remote access and manual control, but a properly programmed building should perform many routine functions automatically.
The objective is fewer daily interactions, not more screens and buttons.

08What is Loxone?+
Loxone is a home and building automation platform centred around the Miniserver, which provides the local control and automation logic for the building.
It can coordinate functions including lighting, climate, shading, access, security, audio and energy management.
Madoc uses Loxone as the automation core on many projects because it allows different building functions to operate as one coordinated system rather than as separate controls.
09What is KNX?+
KNX is an international open standard for home and building automation.
It provides a common communication standard that allows compatible products from different manufacturers to work together for functions such as lighting, climate, shading, security and energy management.
Madoc can integrate KNX into a wider automation architecture where it is appropriate for the project.
10What is DALI-2?+
DALI-2 is a standardised digital lighting control protocol used to communicate with compatible lighting equipment and control devices.
It allows lighting to be individually addressed, grouped and controlled digitally, while DALI-2 certification places a strong emphasis on interoperability between compliant products from different manufacturers.
11Can Loxone, KNX and DALI-2 work together?+
Yes. They do not have to compete with one another.
On suitable projects, Madoc can use Loxone as the automation and logic layer, KNX for compatible building devices and controls, and DALI-2 for digital lighting.
The architecture is selected according to the requirements of the project rather than forcing every building onto one technology.
12What systems can Madoc integrate?+
Depending on the project, Madoc can bring together lighting, air conditioning, VRV or VRF systems, motorised shading, multi room audio, security, CCTV, access control, door entry, energy monitoring, professional networking and other building systems.
Integration depends on whether suitable interfaces and communication methods are available for the equipment being specified.
13Can Madoc integrate an existing air conditioning or VRV/VRF system?+
Often, yes.
Integration may be possible through a dedicated gateway, manufacturer interface, KNX, Modbus or another supported communication method.
The exact air conditioning model and available interface need to be checked before Madoc can confirm the level of control and feedback available.
14Can existing or third party products be integrated into the automation system?+
In many cases, yes, but not every product is designed for professional integration.
Madoc first determines what interfaces the equipment provides, such as KNX, DALI-2, Modbus, RS485, dry contacts, IP communication or a documented API.
Where reliable integration is not available, we explain the limitation rather than promise a connection that cannot be supported properly.
Planning Your Project
What to consider before design, construction and installation begin.
15When should Madoc become involved in a new build or renovation?+
As early as possible.
Automation affects electrical wiring, lighting, air conditioning interfaces, network infrastructure, control panels, switches, sensors and other building services.
Early coordination with the architect, interior designer, electrical team and other contractors gives Madoc considerably more freedom to engineer the system properly and reduces unnecessary changes later in construction.
16Can an existing home or building be retrofitted with automation?+
Yes.
The solution depends on the existing wiring, access to ceilings and walls, distribution boards and the scope of renovation.
Some buildings can accept additional wired infrastructure, while others are better suited to a hybrid approach using existing wiring together with appropriate wireless technology such as Loxone Air.
17How much does a professional smart home or building automation system cost?+
Residential and high-end condominium projects generally start from around RM80,000, and bungalow projects from around RM120,000.
These are starting automation budgets rather than fixed package prices. Light fittings, curtain or blind motors and electrical works are excluded unless separately quoted. The final project value depends on the size of the property and the required scope, including the number of lighting circuits, air conditioning zones, blinds, audio zones, sensors, interfaces, control panels and integrated systems.
Madoc develops the system architecture first and prepares the proposal around the actual requirements of the building rather than selling a generic smart home package.
18How long does an automation project take?+
It depends on the size of the building and its construction programme.
Madoc's work normally progresses through design and coordination, panel engineering, installation, integration, programming, testing and commissioning.
On a construction project, these stages are coordinated with the wider electrical, mechanical and interior works rather than treated as a single installation visit.
19Does Madoc work only in Kuala Lumpur?+
No.
Madoc is based in Kuala Lumpur and undertakes suitable residential and commercial automation projects throughout Malaysia.
Project feasibility, site coordination and support requirements are considered during the initial discussion.
20Does Madoc work on both residential and commercial projects?+
Yes.
Residential projects can range from individual integrated systems to extensive whole home automation.
Commercial automation can be applied to offices, hospitality, customer facilities, places of worship, industrial properties and other buildings where coordinated control and automated operation are beneficial.
The engineering principles may be similar, but residential and commercial buildings can have very different operational requirements.
Ownership & Support
What happens after commissioning and how the system remains maintainable.
21Can the system be expanded or changed later?+
Usually, yes, particularly when future expansion has been considered during the original design.
Additional automation logic, devices, zones or integrations can often be introduced later.
The amount of spare control panel capacity, cabling, available interfaces and network infrastructure will affect what can be added without further physical work.
22How secure is a professionally designed smart home?+
Security depends on the complete system architecture, not simply whether a product has an app.
Madoc favours local control for core automation and considers the network, user access, remote connectivity and dependencies of integrated third party devices during system design.
No connected system should be described as absolutely secure. The objective is to reduce unnecessary dependencies and design the system with appropriate access and network practices from the beginning.
23What happens after the project is completed?+
Madoc continues to support the system after commissioning and handover.
Madoc's standard hardware warranty is 24 months, subject to the terms of the project proposal, and we can continue to assist with troubleshooting, programming changes, system optimisation and future upgrades or additions.
The intention is to maintain a long term technical relationship rather than simply complete the installation and leave.
24Am I permanently dependent on Madoc to maintain my Loxone system?+
No. Your Loxone system is not intended to depend permanently on one individual programmer.
Madoc provides the relevant project and service contact information as part of the handover, and Loxone itself maintains its own support resources and a network of trained integrators.
Loxone Config, the software used to configure the system, is available without subscription or licence fees. With the appropriate system access credentials, the current configuration can also be loaded from the Miniserver, allowing another suitably experienced Loxone integrator to work with the system in future.
As Loxone adoption grows, the pool of professionals familiar with the platform can continue to broaden. Good documentation, handover information and access credentials remain important, but the system is not designed to rely permanently on Madoc alone.
25Can automation reduce energy consumption?+
Automation can help identify and reduce unnecessary consumption through scheduling, presence based control, temperature management, shading, energy monitoring and automated switching.
The actual saving depends heavily on the building, how it is used and the systems being controlled.
Madoc does not promise a fixed energy saving percentage without project specific data.
